Chapters of You
Falling in love with someone means loving their story as it unfolds
Rustling pages drop your words
from their leaves.
Commas to offer peace
amid meanings fall with them.
Periods give pause between
each summer gift you bestow
on a swaying trunk of grit,
as your lines like branches grow
to flower thoughts once unsaid.
Semicolons, here and there, punctuate
draws from the roots
of what you’ve known
and yet to know
of teeming nests, cradled in your canopy,
and birds singing your warmth in verse.
Foliage shakes overhead, translating
light from the ring of wind chimes.
Your book rests on my lap;
its passages caught in the
speckled afternoon glow.
Question marks on the page
dance with the leaking shade.
Answers cluster nearby on
the fruits of your every scene,
sheltering cosmic mysteries in their seeds.
These gentle cliffhangers and the truths
you’ve sown startle my heart into view,
leaving me hungry for more and more
chapters of you.
